Bondo women demonstrate in Bo, Sierra Leone

Have you heard the news today published in Global Times - Bondo women demonstrate in Bo Town, Sierra Leone?? Well, needless to say I am not surprised.  This is a moment for the Government of Sierra Leone to listen closely to the bulk of proudly circumcised women in the country. This is a time to rethink the invidious propaganda sold to us over the past 30-40 years by anti-Female Genital Mutilation activists and reproduced by international organizations such as UNICEF, WHO and UNFPA on their websites, brochures, videos and other media.  This is the time for our Presidential aspirants to address the urgent issue of our rights to self-determination, our autonomy as adult women and importantly our equality with with men in Sierra Leone.  

​This is the time to have a real discussion on the paucity of evidence of the "harmfulness" of so-called FGM in light of the increasing number of labiaplasties and clitoral reduction operations performed on affluent white women and girls in western countries.  This is the time to get rid of the racist and misogynist term Female Genital Mutilation. This is the time to support a truly grassroots movement led by the Soweis and the women in Bo on behalf of all proud Bondo and Sande women in Sierra Leone. We stand behind our mothers all the way!
